The island, located just north of that of Spargi, is famous for the mythical Pink Beach. The coral-colored beach, the chromatic intensity of the colors of the sea and the shapes of the granite that surround the cove constitute a unique spectacle in the world. The pink beach of Budelli – immortalized by the director Michelangelo Antonioni with a very long sequence in the film “Red Desert” – is located south-east of the island of Budelli in the Archipelago of La Maddalena and is so defined because of its characteristic pink color coral. In reality this depends on the presence in the shoreline of calcareous shells of Miniacina miniacea, a foraminiferous protozoan, whose habitat is identified in the rhizomes of Posidonia oceanica, the most important marine phanerogama of the Mediterranean Sea. The famous Pink Beach is one of the most protected areas of the entire La Maddalena Archipelago, since access to the beach, transit or parking of nautical vehicles in the water in front of it and bathing have always been prohibited. Thanks to the institutive laws and the specific ordinances issued over the years, the Pink Beach is fully protected. In the territory of the Park, in any case, the supervision of compliance with the protection rules is the task of the police.
Razzoli and Santa Maria
They are almost joined by the Asinelli Pass. The island of Razzoli is the most exposed to the north and impresses with the majesty of its cliff and the shapes of its rocks, similar to Moore’s sculptures. The lighthouse overlooking the Strait of Bonifacio is imposing and evocative. In S. Maria, however, where there are some houses built before the construction bans, there is still an ancient and modest convent where in the Middle Ages the Benedictine friars, fleeing from Boniface, found refuge. The island has a beautiful beach, Cala Santa Maria, one of the largest in the archipelago. In the peace of Santa Maria the screenwriter Franco Solinas, one of the most prestigious authors of world cinema, has written many pages of the most important films of Italian “committed” cinema. In the suggestion of these places rests Gian Maria Volontè who sails alone among the islands and in the impetuous wind of the Archipelago.
Porto della Madonna
This is the name of the lagoon with an emerald sea enclosed between the islands of Budelli, Razzoli and S. Maria. It is undoubtedly the most evocative place in the Park. A popular destination for yachtsmen who frequent the sea in the north east of Sardinia. In this extraordinary body of water, the Park has reserved large areas of the sea dedicated to snorkeling and seawatching activities.
